CONGRATS ACTON MOVING INTO THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!
NEWTON — The Acton-Boxboro football team won its seventh straight game and clinched the Dual County League championship in convincing fashion on Saturday with a dominant victory over Newton South.
Acton-Boxboro rode the running back tandem of Trevor Jeanson and Akeem Mercury to the 28-6 victory.
Jeanson carried the ball 23 times for 233 yards and three touchdowns, while Mercury picked up 45 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. The duo helped Acton-Boxboro control the pace of the game and the clock.
``Our offense is built around the running game and one of our strengths besides running down people's throats is the ability to run out the clock,'' said Mercury.
A-B's relentless ground attack begins with its athletic offensive line. The front five of the Colonials was not only controlling the line of scrimmage, but made numerous blocks downfield on linebackers and defensive backs.
``That's the best offensive line we've faced all year, they're physical and strong,'' said South coach Ted Dalicandro. ``You know what they're going to run, but they're going to run it anyway and force you to stop them.''
South hung with one of the state's top-ranked teams for most of the first half and trailed by only one score with seven minutes left in the second quarter. Then A-B embarked on an 18-play, 96-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 3-yard touchdown dive by Jeanson with 13 seconds left. The score gave A-B a 14-0 lead going into halftime and took the wind out of South's sails.
``It's definitely a morale killer,'' said South's Evan Goldberg.
``We had three penalties on that series, which kills you, you can't give them 30 yards,'' said Dalicandro. ``You have to play a near perfect game to beat these guys, we had the effort we just made some mistakes.''
South was unable to muster much offense in the first half and kept the ball on the ground.
``It kind of surprised me a bit because I know they like to throw it,'' said A-B coach Bill Maver.
Lions quarterback Derek Russell attempted just five first-half passes.
``They came out in a defense that was like a dime defense,'' said Dalicandro. ``We just tried to establish the run on them because they're a fast team and are able to cover our guys.''
Mercury found the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run on Acton-Boxboro's first possession of the second half, pushing the lead to 21-0.
The Lions got on the board with 6:10 left in the third quarter on a 11-yard touchdown pass from Derek Russell to Goldberg to close the gap to 21-6. South got the ball back early in the fourth quarter on Willie Allen's interception in the end zone. However, after driving 64 yards on 19 plays the Lions stalled inside the A-B 20 line, turning the ball over on downs.
Three plays later, Jeanson put the game to rest. Jeanson rushed left, broke a tackle from a linebacker and then reversed field to the right out running South's defense for a 74-yard touchdown run. The spectacular rush put Acton-Boxboro ahead 28-6.
Russell was limited to nine pass completions in 25 attempts for 103 yards and one touchdown.
South drops to 4-6 and will have another losing season regardless of the outcome on Thanksgiving against Lincoln-Sudbury. South's last winning season was in 1994.
A-B improves to 9-1 overall, and 4-0 in the DCL Large. The Colonials will host Westford on Thanksgiving before advancing to the Division 1A playoffs.
